Memories flood back! My mum had the printed T shirt concession in the Sussex Bar at Pontins in 1974 or 75. So my school holidays aged 8 were spent killing time, mostly moping around with no money because apart from the slides we weren’t allowed to use any of the facilities, except occasionally the ice cold swimming pool. On one occasion, I jumped off the diving board and scraped my leg on the pool side. A helpful gentlemen guest there insisted I accompany him to the toilets for a “medical exam”, which of course I now appreciate was not actually the case. When I told mum about the helpful man who’d checked “everything was alright” I wasn’t even allowed to use the bloody pool! All said and done, most of the guests were genuinely down to earth, friendly and doing their best to have a great holiday.

I went to Ramsgate by mistake some years ago, having walked further than I’d thought down the coast from Broadstairs. Didn’t stay long, although I did see this remarkable example of dilapidated architecture.

Another superb read! My memory of Ramsgate was arriving on the bus from Margate, where I’d gone to see Mr Solo, having a pint in a Victorian pub overlooking the harbour and eating a pensioners’ special saith and chips for £1.80 on the beach. Clearly i should have gone by train! Still haven’t visited Broadstairs.

We know this area well, as we often went on holiday thereabouts in our early married years, and we still go back quite often. Mrs W made a fine sketch of a Kraken creeping up the beach at Barton on Sea. Your description captures the atmosphere so very well.
The only feature I would add, in the interests of general weirdness (always to be encouraged), is the most unexpected velodrome at Calshot. I suppose there are less likely places to have built a velodrome, but I’d be hard pressed to name very many of them.
